For footballers, one bad injury can destroy an entire career. It’s likely they’ve spent most of their lives building up their strength and skill to make their way into a professional league. And it can disappear all at once. Many who get injured can spend years in physical rehab trying to get back into shape — some without great success, despite their best efforts.
But for those who have overcome the odds, the injury doesn’t mean the end.
Aaron Ramsay
Aaron Ramsey was just 20 when he started to play for the first team at Arsenal. Things were looking wonderful until 2010 for the player until a defender from Stoke broke his right leg through a bad tackle. He had a long process to recovery, with it taking a total of 9 months to fully get better.
Once he returned, he became a key member of their team, scoring 64 goals in his 369 appearances including being the winners in the 2014 and 2017 FA Cup finals.
In 2019, he had a hamstring injury and left Arsenal to join Juventus, becoming Serie A Champions during his first season. Ramsay has performed magnificently since joining the team, earning him the nickname “Un Gregario”, which means the assistant in Italian. His consistent performance and work rate has made him a fan favourite and the team will need players like him, if they wish to come out on top this season. Juventus has performed well so far this season and is currently tipped second to win the league according to betting odds at 888sport (at the time this article was written).
Petr Cech
Defending Premier League champions Chelsea was the Czech goalkeeper Petr Cech when he got injured. He was at the top of his game, with his prowess as a goalkeeper known by all.It was a collision with Reading player Stephen Hunt in a PL game back in 2006.
It seemed like it was a simple collision but turned into a horrifying incident. Cech’s life was in peril after suffering a skull fracture and having to undergo emergency surgery in a bid to save his life. Thankfully he made a fantastic recovery and within four months, was back on the pitch. He had to play with a special head guard to protect his skull but continued to play on a high level for years afterwards. In 2012 he won the Champions League — as well as two Premier League titles over the years following his injury.
Ronaldo (The Old One)
The Brazilian forward has had his fair share of injuries over the years, suffering knee injuries during his career. The first one happened at PSV Eindhoven resulting him having to miss his 1995-97 season. A huge amount of issues began for him in 1999 after he, unfortunately, ruptured a tendon in his knee. Six months later, he was back. It turned out it was too early. After just six minutes of his first game — he ended up having to miss out the whole season during 2000-01. His comeback came after two operations where he performed an incredible football injury comeback and led the Brazil team to a huge victory as part of the 2002 World Cup. He spent a furthermore successful seasons at Real Madrid and scored an astonishing 104 goals for the team.
Ruud van Nistelroy
Former Manchester United player Ruud van Nistelroy suffered an injury before the completion of his transfer to the club. Out for several months, he had his knee injury still when United bought him a year afterwards. Nistelroy became one of their best ever players, scoring 36 goals in his first season. He went onto play for another four years totalling 150 goals in 219 appearances, still one of the greatest performances of the club ever.
