Derby County have been charged by the English Football League for a breach of financial rules and face a possible points deduction. The charge relates to exceeding the permitted levels of losses over the three-year period, up to June 2018. Championship clubs are allowed to lose £39m over three years. The main problem is a last summer controversial sale of Pride Park to the club’s owner, Mel Morris. Just a few months later, The Rams signed Wayne Rooney, an all-time England top scorer.
All of that can carry heavy penalties. Last year Birmingham City remained without nine points for exceeding the permitted levels of losses over the three-year period.
To make matters worse, Derby County’s summer record signing, Poland midfielder Krystian Bielik, was injured on Monday night in the U23 clash against Tottenham. He sustained a knee injury and will miss the rest of the Championship season. Bielik joined the club from Arsenal FC and has made 21 appearances in all competitions this term.
