Struggling German Bundesliga side Fortuna Dusseldorf released head coach Friedhelm Funkel (66) on Wednesday morning. Funkel took over the club in March 2016, and led Fortuna in 138 competitive matches. He also achieved promotion to the Bundesliga in 2018.
At the same time, Fortuna appointed Uwe Rösler (51), former manager of Malmö FF, Fleetwood Town, Leeds United, Wigan Athletic, Brentford, Molde, Viking and Lillestrøm, as a new head coach. Rösler signed a one and a half year contract with Fortuna Düsseldorf.
Fortuna have only one win in the last nine Bundesliga games, and only four wins this season. The club is in the last place in the league table, three points from the safe zone.
