An explosive device exploded at the referee’s car in Larnaca, fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. A car belonging to 33-year-old referee Andreas Constantinou who was recently involved in a match between Doxa and AEL which ended in a draw (2-2). After the game, AEL had expressed complaints about the refereeing. Constantinou was also the referee in a cup game between Ayia Napa and Pafos FC which also raised a red flag suggesting it could have been fixed due to suspicious betting activity. Shockingly, this was not the first time a referee car has been targeted in Cyprus.
Turbulent time for Cypriot football again resulting in match-fixing and corruption allegations. Police spokesman Christos Andreou said that suspicious bets had been placed in Asian countries.
“At the moment, 22 files are under investigation. Since 2011, 84 cases have arrived” Andreou said.
