Which Team Suffered Most Injuries in Premier League 2023/24?

Compared to the previous seasons of the Premier League, we have seen a significant rise in the percentage of player injuries for the 2023/2024 Premier League. This has raised a lot of concerns not only for the teams but also among football fans, betters, and football pundits.

Based on the latest record, the Manchester United team witnessed the highest number of reported player injuries for the 2023-24 Premier League season. With his leg injury, Man Utd’s team member Luke Shaw has been out of action since February, while central defender, Harry Maguire, failed to show up for the last five games due to his muscle injury. Manchester’s left-back defender, Tyrell Malacia, remained on the sidelines and did not participate in the 2023/24 season.

In addition, the Old Trafford club introduced 21 teammates to the player injury list for this season, followed by Newcastle, Luton Town, and Chelsea with 11 injuries, which led to missing one game.

With the total number of matches players participate in every Premier League season, a lot of players from the clubs face unexpected injuries, which leads to being sidelined or temporarily excluded from the match lineup. This can also be noticed in the 2023/24 Premier League season. However, the number of injuries this season is quite high compared to any of the previous seasons.

Since player injury has become a matter of major concern, we have decided to dive deep into it and explore the football clubs that have suffered the most injuries this season.

The Premier League and Common Injuries

As a high-intensity sport, football players are prone to multiple injuries. The most common injuries players face are sprains, muscular strains, and ACL- Anterior Cruciate Ligament.

The success of a football team depends on a lot of factors: squad harmony, summer recruitment, better tactical understanding, with the most important aspect being which club is the best at keeping the players away from the treatment room. However, the current stats show that most teams have failed to focus on the last factor.

Some experts have said that the Premier League’s congested schedule is risking the health of players and also killing many ‘good products.’

Talking about the current season, Chelsea has witnessed the highest number of injuries while Brentford and Newcastle are next in line. Besides, Tottenham, Manchester United, and Brighton also have experienced significant injuries that have severely impacted the clubs’ performance.

Chelsea has lost more than 305 games due to injuries since the 2023/24 season kicked off. Newcastle ranks second in the list with 258 games missed followed by Brentford at 255.

Read on to know more about every team’s injury statistic in detail.

Chelsea

It is hard to believe that top performers like Chelsea have lost the most games due to injuries of players. Football clubs like Brentford and Sheffield United have struggled through a major injury crisis with limited resources compared to Chelsea. Top players like Romeo Lavia joined the team in the summer but have hardly played for the team this season due to multiple injuries.  Enzo Fernandez, Wesley Fofana, Reece James, Lesley Ugochukwu, and Ben Chilwell, all suffered from major injuries. Some of these players are still recovering.

Newcastle United

We must say that Newcastle has failed to maintain the standard they set in the previous season. The reason for this is Magpies’ poor performance. Their rising injury stats need to be taken into consideration seriously. Within a few days after joining the team, Sandro Tonali faced a 10-month suspension. Besides, the injury on Eddie Howe’s side worsens the matter. Well-known players like Jammal Lascelles and Sven Botman remained off-field due to knee injury. Other players who missed the games this season due to injuries are Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, and Joe Willock. It may be noted that Newcastle United missed more than 250 games due to injury.

Brentford

The 2023/24 season was not that good for Brentford fans. The club suffered with around 20 injuries and missed more than 255 games. Even though Ivan Toney got a chance to play with the team after being suspended due to some gambling-related issue, his performance was not up to the mark.  Ben Mee, Aaron Hickey, and Ricky Henry remained out from the team.  On the other hand, Josh Dasilva also missed some games and isn’t expected to return to the team until November 2024.

Manchester United

The football club has missed more than 230 games because of injuries and also demonstrated an underwhelming performance this season. After the group stage campaign, the club was knocked out of the league. There is little chance of the club getting qualified for top competition in Europe next season as most top-rated players are currently suffering from various injuries. Besides, another major factor is the absence of Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez. Both these players were amazing during their debut games, but in the 2023/24 season, they barely managed to perform well due to injury. Meanwhile, some other players who remained out of the game due to injuries are Tyrell Malacia, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Raphael Varane.

Crystal Palace

Until 10th May 2024, Crystal Palace recorded a loss of 1496 days because of injury. The team underperformed this season, with the major reason for it being that the club has had to play without their top-rated players. Sam Johnstone remained out of the game due to his elbow injury. On the other hand, Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise, the two powerful players of the team were ruled out of the team.

Other Premier League Clubs and Increasing Injury Rate

Other prominent Premier League rivals like Arsenal, Liverpool, and Aston Villa have lost more than 500 days and 100+ games due injuries.

Just after 3 months of the 2023/24 season, experts observed a 15 percent rise in the total number of players injured, compared to 2022/23. Though is impossible to find out the exact reason behind injuries, with every team and player facing different circumstances, experts have predicted that things may get worse in the future.

In the next season, 36 football clubs will participate in the European League and Champions League. Besides, the number of match rounds will also be higher. Instead of 6, there will be 8 match rounds. That means it will be challenging for the clubs to provide their players with sufficient rest time.

Diving deeper, we can say players are spending more than 20 to 25 days side-lined this season compared to 15 days in the 2022/23 season. As the number and severity of injuries rise, the consequences for the league, teams, and players have become more pronounced.
