Bahrain Premier League Explained
The Bahraini Premier League, or the Nasser bin Hamad Premier League as it is currently called, is the top-tier football competition in the Kingdom of Bahrain. It started operation in 1957 and currently features ten teams, all fighting for the championship title.
Every season, the teams play in a double round-robin system where they have to face every other team twice, once home and once away. This results in each team playing a total of 18 games. It’s worth mentioning that even though there are home and away matches, most are played at the National Stadium.
Teams are ranked in a typical fashion for football tournaments, and the team that scores the most points at the end of the season is the champion. They and the second-ranked team enter the AFC Cup group stage, the second-biggest annual tournament in Asia.
The two worst teams get relegated to the Bahraini Second Division, the second-tier league in the kingdom. The third-worst team has to play a relegation play-off match, which gives them a chance to remain in the league for the next season, as long as they win.
This is the current structure of the league that used to feature several instances of radical changes in how it operates.
The clubs playing in the current 2021-22 season are:
– Khalidiya
– Al Hala Club
– Budaiya
– Manama Club
– Al-Muharraq Sports Club
– Al Riffa
– Al Najma Club
– Al-Hidd SCC
– Al Ahli Club (Manama)
– East Riffa Club
Top Teams and Players in the Bahrain Premier League
The top team in the league is undoubtedly Al-Muharraq SC, the football club from Muharraq. It’s one of the oldest teams on the Arabian Peninsula, but more importantly, it has won the Bahrain Premier League 34 times out of the 63 wrapped seasons so far. However, the last time they were champions was in the 2017-18 season.
The 2018-19 season was won by Al-Riffa, and Al-Hidd won the subsequent season. The champion of the 2020-21, the last season, is Al-Riffa as well.
The second-best team is Al-Riffa, with 13 champion titles, and we can easily say that they are currently the best team in the league.
After them come Bahrain SC and Al-Ahli SC, each with five champion titles, and then the previously mentioned Al-Hidd, the team that won the league two times.
The remaining teams that have won the Bahrain Premier League champion title are Al-Nasr, Al-Arabi (Al-Najma now), Al Hala, East Riffa SCC, Busaiteen, and Malkiya SCC.
The top scorer of the 2020-21 season was Mahdi Abduljabbar from the Manama Club with 12 goals. The top scorer of the 2019-20 league was Kamil Al Aswad playing for Al-Riffa. He scored a total of 14 goals.
Best Betting Markets for the Bahraini Premier League
If you only want to bet on the winner of the entire season, it’s hard to go wrong with Al-Muharraq, the biggest team in the league. However, as they haven’t been as good lately, you should probably opt for Al-Riffa or Khalidiya.

When it comes to goals, a lot are scored every season. The average is usually above 2.30 goals per match, so if you’re looking to bet on totals, it’s best to place over 1.5 bets or under 3.5 and maybe under 2.5 wagers.
There’s not a big difference between home and away matches when it comes to winners, especially in the current season. Home wins are still more common, and draws are only slightly more common than away wins.
The most common scorelines are 1-1 and 1-0. A 0-0 final score is not uncommon either, so it could still be a good choice, as it usually happens in more than 10% of matches.
If you’re looking to place some live bets on goals like many players want to, you should know that goals are most often scored between 76’ and 90’.
