Sometimes football can be amazing and thrilling, but when someone gets injured, it’s like everything in the world halts. That said, here are the most gruesome injuries that have ever happened in the history of football.
Eduardo Da Silva

Martin Taylor, a Birmingham midfielder, then closed in and lunged in with a high boot. It caught Da Silva’s ankle as it was stuck on the ground. His ankle immediately dislocated and broke his fibula in half.
The injury was so bad that the commentator immediately told the viewers they couldn’t show it on live TV. Taylor was sent off the field with a red card for the tackle. After that injury, Eduardo Da Silva still played but never in the top leagues again.
Kieron Dyers
Kieron Dyers is an English footballer who, up until that point, had a very good career. He played for Ipswich Town and Newcastle United before moving to West Ham United in 2007.
However, a harrowing event happened just ten days after he made his first appearance in the club. Keiron Dyers suffered a gruesome injury playing against the Bristol Rovers in a match in the Carabao Cup. Kieron Dyers suffered a leg injury, specifically with his right leg being broken in two.
Seventeen months later, he was back at it again, but the injury continued to plague his career. He then later went on to play for Queen Park Rangers and Middleborough before he eventually retired. In a 2018 article published in the Daily Mail, he stated that retiring was a huge relief for him, implying that his leg injury continued to plague him until his last days as a footballer.
Patrick Battiston
Patrick Battiston was a French Defender back in his days. But it all took a sudden turn during their match in July 1982. Battiston came into the second half of the match as a substitute, and then ten minutes later, he saw a chance to score. He took a first-time shot in the game past the post as German goalkeeper Toni Schumacher raced toward him.
Schumacher, already upset because of the constant taunting made by the crowd because of an earlier play, did not try to slow down. Instead, he went on full force and leaped towards Battiston, intentionally contorting his body to crash into him.
The collision knocked Battiston out. Along with a few teeth missing, he damaged his vertebrae and had to leave the match on a stretcher. He later slipped into a coma. Battiston recovered, though, and he went to play for France until his retirement.
Bert Trautmann
Bert Trautmann was an excellent goalkeeper, doing what was necessary to keep the ball out of his team’s net. He played for the Man City Club from 1949 to 1964. However, during the 1955-56 season, he was involved in an injury where he received one of the most horrific injuries in football.
Trautmann dived to catch an incoming ball that collided with his neck against one of Birmingham’s players, Peter Murphy. He continued to play the remainder of the match. It seems like nothing happened, but during an X-Ray after the match, it was found that he had dislocated five of his vertebrae, and the second was even cracked in half.
David Busst
Man City also played a part in a horrific injury with one of their opposing team’s players. David Busst suffered a leg injury that prompted 22 surgeries. Not only that, but an infection also almost claimed his leg; thankfully, he was lucky enough that the infection was stopped. So how did it happen?
Bust was a defender for Coventry City against Man City. Bust later found himself in the Man City box, and as he attempted to kick a rebound, he collided with defender Denis Irwin. The impact caused a series of fractures in his leg, snapping his tibia and fibula. The bones were sticking out of his skin which caused high volumes of blood to seep from his wounds.
